Tricia Smith Appointed to IOC Medical and Scientific Commission
TORONTO — On Thursday, it was announced that Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) President Tricia Smith has been appointed to the IOC Medical and Scientific Commission. She will serve alongside five-time Olympic medallist, Hayley Wickenheiser; three-time Paralympic medallist, Todd Nicholson; IOC Member, Richard Pound; two-time Olympian, Sylvia Sweeney; Canadian sports official, Adham Sharara; COC Board Member, Walter Sieber; business leader, Ann Duffy; and Innsbruck 1976 silver medallist, Cathy Priestner, who continue as a members of key IOC Commissions.
Pound will continue to fulfil roles under four pillars, including the Olympic Channel Board of Directors, Legal Affairs, Marketing and the Olympic Broadcasting Services Board of Directors. Priestner continues on the Olympic Programme Commission while Sweeney is renewed on the Culture and Olympic Heritage Commission. Nicholson will continue on the Athletes’ Commission and Coordination, while Sharara will sit on the Coordination Commission for the 3rd Summer Youth Olympic Games, Buenos Aires 2018. Sieber continues his work on the Olympic Programme Commission while Duffy will sit on the Sustainability and Legacy Commission. Wickenheiser will continue as an Athletes elected member of the Athletes’ Commission.
COC President Tricia Smith, a lawyer and businesswoman based in Vancouver, has had a successful and multifaceted career in sport. A four-time Olympian in rowing, Smith captured a silver medal at the Los Angeles 1984 Olympic Games. She has also won seven world championship medals as well as a gold medal at the 1986 Commonwealth Games.
