Tricia Smith re-elected to Panam Sports Executive Committee for third term
ASUNCION, PARAGUAY (October 2, 2024) – The Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) is proud to announce the re-election of its President, four-time Olympian and Olympic medallist Tricia Smith, to the Panam Sports Executive Committee. Smith was elected on the first ballot for a third consecutive term until 2028.
The election occurred during the LXII Panam Sports General Assembly in Asuncion, Paraguay.
“Congratulations to Tricia on this well-deserved re-election,” said COC CEO and Secretary General David Shoemaker. “Tricia embodies the values of integrity and respect, consistently championing principle-based decisions and outcomes. Her unwavering commitment to addressing the region’s challenges and celebrating our shared success will surely continue to benefit our region and sport as a whole.”
At the 2022 General Assembly, Smith was re-elected to a four-year term as one of Panam Sports’ members on the Association of National Olympic Committees Executive Council. Earlier this year, Smith was re-elected as a Member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), where she has been an elected member since 2016.
“It is a tremendous honour to be elected for a third term on the Panam Sports Executive Committee,” said Smith. “I would like to congratulate President Neven Ilic on his re-election. I look forward to working with the Executive Committee to advance sport in the Americas focusing on good governance, ensuring safe and healthy environments for athletes, building strength through solidarity, and embracing our diversity. “
Smith also serves as Vice President of World Rowing, board member of the International Council of Arbitration for Sport, ANOC Executive Council representative for the Americas, and member of three IOC Commissions – Legal Affairs, Gender Equality, Diversity and Inclusion and the Coordination for the XXV Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026.
In addition to her volunteer roles, Smith is a recipient of the Order of Canada and the Order of British Columbia, and holds honorary degrees from the University of British Columbia, the University of Alberta, and Western University. She is also a member of the Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame, the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame and the BC Sports Hall of Fame.
