Andrew Coe tries to avoid being tackled

Andrew Coe

Biography

Andrew Coe first joined the Canadian Sevens team in the summer of 2017, playing in a Test against Georgia. Unfortunately, right before the start of the 2017-18 World Rugby Sevens Series, Coe broke his arm during a 15s friendly in France against Fiji. He returned to Canada for surgery to have a plate put into his arm. The injury and rehab forced him to miss the 15s World Cup Qualifiers and the first half of the Sevens Series season.

Once healthy, he joined the sevens team for his first event in Las Vegas in 2018 and scored his first Sevens Series try a few weeks later in Singapore. In 2018 he also represented Canada at both the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, where he scored one try, and the World Cup Sevens in San Francisco.

Coe became more of a regular fixture in the Sevens Series lineup during the 2018-19 season, appearing in 25 matches and scoring six tries. He played for Canada at the 2019 RAN Sevens, helping Canada win gold. The first-place finish at the tournament secured the Canadian men’s team a spot at Tokyo 2020. In the shortened 2019-20 season, Coe had four tries in 13 matches, helping Canada finish in the top-eight.

Coe played in four games during his Olympic debut at Tokyo 2020 where Canada advanced to the quarterfinals.

As primarily a fullback in rugby union, Coe captained the Canadian U18 and U20 teams while with the development program, highlighted by winning silver at 2015 U20 World Rugby Trophy in Lisbon. He achieved an early career highlight with the senior 15s team in 2017 when he was awarded the Man of the Match during a loss to the All Blacks in Vancouver. In 2019 he played in the World Cup in Japan, scoring Canada’s lone try during their opening match against Italy. Coe played collegiately for the UBC Thunderbirds, winning the Canadian University Men’s Championship in 2017.
