Statement regarding the securing of two quota spots for Beach Volleyball at London 2012

TORONTO – The following statement was issued today by the Canadian Olympic Committee regarding Canada earning two quota spots for Beach Volleyball at London 2012:

“This is a great day for beach volleyball in Canada – both for our athletes and for the sport as a whole. Winning both the men’s and women’s events sends a clear signal of both the strength of our team as well as an indication of the growing popularity and performance potential of Canadian beach volleyball players.”
Hugh Wong, President, Volleyball Canada

“On behalf of the Canadian Olympic Committee, I would like to commend the athletes of the national beach volleyball team on their outstanding wins in the finals of the Continental Games Cup qualifying Tournament in Mexico this weekend. The dominating performance by both the men’s and the women’s team demonstrate that the Canadians are a force to be reckoned with as Canada heads into London this summer.  I wish all the athletes the best in your coming trials.”
Marcel Aubut, President, Canadian Olympic Committee

“We are very proud of both the men and the women’s beach volleyball national teams for their strong performance at the continental qualifier. Their victories in the competition have not only secured Canada two entries for the Olympic Games in London this summer, but have given the world a true taste of what they can expect from Canadian athletes this summer.”
