Olympic champion Simon Whitfield retires from triathlon

On Tuesday, Olympic champion and two-time medallist Simon Whitfield announced that he is retiring from competitive triathlon.

Whitfield ends a 16-year career that included a gold medal for Canada in the first Olympic triathlon at the Sydney 2000 Games.

Eight years later at the Games of the XXIX Olympiad in Beijing, Whitfield made an inspired late charge at a second gold before finishing with the silver becoming a two-time Olympic medallist.

The four-time Olympian called his career “an incredible journey and an amazing chapter in my life,” according to CBC Sports.

Whitfield won a gold medal at the 2002 Commonwealth Games. He ends a triathlon career that includes 14 World Cup victories.
