Prime Minister Makes First Visit to the Richmond Olympic Oval
On Tuesday August 4, Prime Minister Stephen Harper made his first visit to the Richmond Olympic Oval, accompanied by British Columbia Premier Gordon Campbell. The Prime Minister was not able to attend the venue’s grand opening in December, however, he made up for lost time on Tuesday with a tour of the facility and a chat with members of the Canadian national Speed skating team.
Harper was pleased that the project was completed within budget and on time, providing the Canadian Speed skaters with the advantage and opportunity to train on the ice prior to the Games. In addition, the venue’s construction created many much needed local jobs.
In February, the Richmond Oval will be the venue for all long track Speed skating events (12 medal events) and will host up to 50 skaters from around the world. The Speed skating events will run from February 13-27, 2010.
