Singapore, Day Two: Canada Earns Three 4th-Place Finishes
Canada’s first day of competition in Youth Olympic Games history was marked by close calls in the pool and in fencing and a convincing victory on the hardwood.
So close: Canadian swimmers earned three top-5 finishes Sunday night in their first taste of competition. Chad Bobrosky (Calgary) and Jeremy Bagshaw (Saanichton, B.C.) finished 4th and 5th respectively in the 400-metre freestyle. Both had advanced to the final after winning their respective heats. “The effort was there tonight,” Bobrosky said. “We’ll learn from it and use it going forward.” Bobrosky and Bagshaw were also part of the mixed-gender 4×100-metre freestyle team that just missed landing on the podium. “I think it goes to show that the little things have to be perfect,” said Lindsay Delmar (Calgary). Said Bagshaw: “You learn to make the next one better.”
Goldie goes for it: Alanna Goldie finished 4th in the girls foil fencing competition. The 16-year-old Calgarian won seven straight matches to open the day, before falling in the semifinals and coming up just short in the bronze medal match.
Girls bounce Vanuatu: The Canadian girls basketball team beat Vanuatu 27-12 in a preliminary match Sunday morning. Kaylee Kilpatrick (St. John, N.B.) led all scorers with 11 points and owned the boards, collecting five rebounds. “We went in not knowing too much about them,” Kilpatrick said. “We just had to outwork them, and play together as a team.”
