Team Sails Ahead With Nominations
DORSET, UK – The Canadian Yachting Association will nominate 11 athletes to the 2012 Canadian Olympic Team. Richard Clarke (Toronto, Ont.), Tyler Bjorn (Montreal, Que.), Greg Douglas (Toronto, Ont.), David Wright (Montreal, Que.), Danielle Dube (Halifax, N.S.), Gordon Cook (Toronto, Ont.), Hunter Lowden (North Vancouver, B.C.), Mike Leigh (Nanaimo, B.C.), Zac Plavsic (Vancouver, B.C.), Nikola Girke (West Vancouver, B.C.) and Luke Ramsay (Vancouver, B.C.) will represent Canada in London.
“The energy is picking up every time more athletes are nominated to the Team,” said 2012 Canadian Olympic Team Chef de Mission Mark Tewksbury. “The Canadian Olympic Team will make our country proud in London. Their hard work and successes will inspire us all.”
“It has taken so much hard work to be nominated to the Canadian Olympic Team,” said 2012 Canadian Olympic Team Assistant Chef de Mission Sylvie Bernier. “Welcome to the 2012 Canadian Olympic Team.”
“The Olympic selection was not easy but in hindsight it was a good experience to get ready for the Olympic regatta,” said David Wright. “Looking forward to Weymouth I have been preparing very well and anything can happen, so I will be looking to start strongly and to fight hard all the way through to the medal race on August 6th.”
“It feels fantastic to have qualified for the London Olympics,” said Mike Leigh. “Luke and I have been working incredibly hard over the past 14 months to learn how to sail the 470 and will continue pushing hard over these next couple of months. We are very fortunate to have a world class support team, helping us all the way and look forward to carrying our momentum through the Olympics.”
“Making the 2012 Olympic Team has been very surreal,” said Tyler Bjorn. “It has been a dream of mine since early in my career and one I thought had passed me by. To have another chance and make good on the deal with a great friend as well as the opportunity to share it with my kids makes it all the more special.”
“The athletes of the 2012 Canadian Olympic Team are truly heroes,” said Canadian Olympic Committee President Marcel Aubut. “All Canadians can look forward to seeing them distinguish themselves on the world’s biggest stage, the Olympic Games.”
