Bouchard bests Williams in Charleston

Key results continue to roll Eugenie Bouchard’s way in 2014 as the 20-year old beat Venus Williams 7-6 (8-6), 2-6, 6-4 in the third round of the Family Circle Cup on Thursday in Charleston, South Carolina.

The Quebecker made headlines this year at the Australian Open becoming only the second Canadian woman to ever reach the semifinals of a grand slam. In Charleston she received a bye into the second round as a top-eight seed (Bouchard is seeded sixth) and advanced to the third round by beating Russia’s Alla Kudryavtseva in straight sets 6-2, 6-0.

Williams reached the third round after defeating South African Chanelle Scheepers 7-5, 7-5 to set up the match against Bouchard. The younger Williams sister Serena – tournament defending champion – also exited early after losing in the second round to Jana Cepelova.

Bouchard, who was awarded Newcomer of the Year by the Women’s Tennis Association in 2013, will next play the winner of Ajla Tomljanovic and number two seed Jelena Jankovic in the quarterfinals.
