Eugenie Bouchard loses to Petkovic in semi of Family Circle Cup
Playing in her third triple-set match in as many days, Westmount’s Eugenie Bouchard lost Saturday’s semi to Germany’s Andrea Petkovic 6-1, 3-6, 5-7. The loss came at the Family Circle Cup, a WTA Premier event in Charleston, South Carolina.
The 20-year-old Bouchard led 4-2 in the third set but gave up too many breaks at the wrong time, including the match clinching game to Petkovic. The German moves on to play either Jana Cepelova or Belinda Bencic in the final.
26-year-old Petkovic, the 14th seed, was actually Bouchard’s lowest seeded opponent of the previous three days. Eugenie bested no. 2 Jelena Jankovic on Friday and no. 10 Venus Williams the day before.
While she is out of the tournament, Bouchard managed to continue her strong season by making the final four. She also registered her fourth career win over a Top 10 player, by beating WTA-ranked no. 8 Jankovic in the quarterfinal.
Bouchard’s next stop is in Quebec City where she’ll join Canada’s Fed Cup playoff against Slovakia April 19 and 20.
