COC and CPC Statement on Future of Sport in Canada Commission’s Final Report
TORONTO (March 24, 2026) – The Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) and Canadian Paralympic Committee (CPC) commend the efforts of the Future of Sport in Canada Commission to build a safer and more inclusive sport system. We thank Justice Lise Maisonneuve, her team, and the thousands of Canadians, including athletes and survivors, for sharing their expertise and lived experiences.
The focus must now shift to action. We believe in a strong, unified, athlete-centred sport system built on the strength of its partners – one that is safe, inclusive, and accessible to all Canadians from grassroots to high performance.
The Commission’s Final Report reinforces priorities the COC and CPC have long championed, and concludes, as we have, that the Canadian sport system is chronically underfunded. Canada’s National Sport Organizations require an urgent and sustained increase in core funding from the federal government. An underfunded system is an unsafe system, and one that will never be able to achieve the many tangible nation-building benefits sport can provide.
Canadians have shown how much they value sport. More than 30.5 million viewers tuned in to the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic Winter Games, and over 10 million viewers watched the Milano Cortina 2026 Paralympic Winter Games. At these Games, our collective national pride was palpable – sport unites Canadians like nothing else.
We look forward to working with Prime Minister Mark Carney, who recently talked about revamping sport funding from playground to podium over the next six months. We will take time to carefully review the commission’s full report, and stand ready to partner with Secretary of State Adam van Koeverden, the federal government, the private sector, and other stakeholders to deliver on the recommendations to make this a defining moment for sport in Canada.
