SCHEDULE: Team Canada’s competition schedule at Lima 2019.

DAY 10 HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Team Canada’s youngest athlete at Lima 2019, 14-year-old fencer Jessica Guo, wins a silver medal (women’s foil fencing) in her first-ever multi-sports Games;
  • Sara Groenewegen throws a perfect game in Canada’s 8-0 win over Venezuela in women’s softball;
  • Jérémy Chartier, who won gold in men’s trampoline on Day 10, was Team Canada’s Opening Ceremony flag bearer at the Youth Olympic Games Buenos Aires 2018.

DAY 10 QUOTES OF THE DAY:

Jennifer ABEL (Two-time Lima 2019 Gold Medalist: Diving – Women’s 3m springboard and Women’s 3m synchronized springboard) on what helped her win two gold medals:

“I learned a lot to calm myself. I’ve been working very, very hard with my coach. I was prepared. I didn’t want to miss, I had a lot of pressure. But I took one dive at a time and I was focusing on what I was doing now and I was not thinking about the future.”

Jeremy CHARTIER (Gold Medallist – Gymnastics – Men’s Trampoline) on what went through his mind when his rivals for the gold medal, the US gymnasts Jeffrey GLUCKSTEIN and Ruben PADILLA, were competing after he had finished his routine:

“Absolutely nothing. It’s a stressful moment when you’re waiting to see which medal you’ve won. I mean, after the fourth gymnast I was in first. So I knew that I would get a medal, just not which one. You can’t do anything about it, so why bother yourself? So I was just waiting. It was a really tight competition, it was super close. But I am extremely happy.”

Samantha SMITH (Gold Medallist – Gymnastics – Women’s Trampoline) on winning gold and keeping the top spot within Canada, after Karen COCKBURN, at Rio 2007, and Rosie MACLENNAN (Guadalajara 2011 and Toronto 2015) took the previous titles:

“I had big shoes to fill. It feels really good. I have had the pleasure to train with the other two Pan American champions so I am happy to be able to put out a big performance as well. I had to change my skills halfway through the routine. I am happy I did that, because I think it enabled me to end really strong. It’s a really good start for me. We have a lot of competitions that will count for Olympic selection so the more successful competitions you get under your belt, the better. I am feeling really good going into the rest of the season.”

Natalie GARCIA (Silver Medallist – Rhythmic Gymnastics – Individual Clubs) on taking silver:

“I am so beyond excited and so happy. I’m happy that I was able to do this for Canada, and I know that I worked really hard for this, so I was just really happy to go out there and win a silver medal. It’s different when you really love your routine, and you just really want to do it to the best of your ability, and I was able to do that today, and so I’m really happy with that. This gives me a lot of confidence to know I can do clean routines, and win medals.”

Sara GROENEWEGEN (Women’s Softball) on throwing a perfect game:

“I had no idea honestly. When you’re in the zone, you’re in the zone. Someone could say something and I would be in a completely different world.”

Sara GROENEWEGEN (Women’s Softball) to the Canadians watching via CBC streaming:

“Thank you for your support. We’re super excited to show the world what Canadian softball can do, but we’re super excited for the chance to be in the Olympics again so thank you for your support.”

Jessica Zi Jia GUO (Silver Medalist: Fencing – Women’s Individual Foil) on her silver medal performance:

“I felt like the whole day, I wasn’t thinking, ‘oh, I have to get a medal’ I was just into my bout and I was focusing on one hit every single time.”
