Paris 2024: Team Canada at the end of Day 1
PARIS (July 27, 2024) – Day 1 at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games has come to a close. Here is what you need to know.

TEAM CANADA INSIGHTS:
ARTISTIC GYMNASTICS
- In men’s gymnastics, Félix Dolci (Laval, Que.) and René Cournoyer (Repentigny, Que.) qualified for the men’s individual all-around final. The pair also helped Canada qualify for the men’s team event final with an eighth-place performance in the qualification round. This is the first time that Canada will compete in the men’s team final at the Olympic Games.
FENCING
- Fares Arfa (Laval, Que.) has earned Canada’s best-ever Olympic result in any men’s individual fencing event. He reached the quarterfinals to finish 8th overall in men’s individual sabre. The previous best was a 10th-place finish by Michel Dessureault in men’s individual épée at Los Angeles 1984.
SWIMMING
- Summer McIntosh (Toronto, Ont.) won Canada’s first medal at Paris 2024, a silver in the women’s 400m freestyle. This is just Canada’s second-ever Olympic medal in the women’s 400m freestyle. Shannon Smith won bronze 48 years ago on home soil at Montreal 1976.
