Santiago 2023: Team Canada at the end of Day 5

SANTIAGO, CHILE (October 25, 2023) – Team Canada added eight gold, three silver and seven bronze to its medal total on Day 5 at the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games. Here is what you need to know.

DAY 5 HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Badminton
    • Canada took home four gold medals on Day 5:
      • Catherine Choi (Markham, Ont.) and Josephine Wu (Edmonton, Alta.) – Women’s Doubles
      • Adam Dong (Burlington, Ont.) and Nyl Yakura (Pickering, Ont.) – Men’s Doubles
      • Brian Yang (Richmond Hill, Ont.) – Men’s Singles
      • Wu and Ty Lindeman (St. Albert, Alta.) – Mixed Doubles 
      • Rachel Chan (Markham, Ont.) officially received a bronze medal today as the women’s singles competition wrapped up.

  • Cycling – Track
    • Team Canada won gold in the women’s team pursuit. The medal marked Canada’s seventh cycling medal so far at Santiago 2023. 
  • Diving
    • The duo of Pamela Ware (Greenfield Park, Que.) and Mia Vallée (Kirkland, Que.) won silver in the women’s synchronized 3m springboard. That performance marked Ware’s third medal at Santiago 2023 and Vallée’s second. 
    • Nathan Zsombor-Murray (Pointe-Claire, Que.) captured silver in the men’s 10m platform, bringing Canada’s medal total in diving at Santiago 2023 to eight.
  • Gymnastics – Artistic
    • The artistic gymnastics program drew to a close on Day 5 with Team Canada adding three more medals to bring the team’s total to 10. 
    • Félix Dolci (Laval, Que.) captured his fifth medal – a bronze in the men’s vault. He capped his incredible run at Santiago 2023 with two gold, one silver and two bronze.
    • René Cournoyer (Repentigny, Que.) and Ava Stewart (Bowmanville, Ont.) captured bronze in men’s horizontal bar and women’s beam, respectively.
  • Rowing
    • Alizée Brien (Val-David, Que.) and Shaye de Paiva (Calgary, Alta.) took home bronze in the women’s double sculls. It is the third medal at Santiago 2023 for Brien and de Paiva, who won gold together in the women’s eight and bronze in the women’s quadruple sculls.
  • Shooting
    • Shannon Westlake (Keswick, Ont.) took bronze in the 50m rifle 3 positions event and officially qualified a quota spot for Canada in this event for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
  • Swimming
    • Canada picked up five more medals in swimming’s final day of competition for a total of 25 at Santiago 2023.
    • Sydney Pickrem (Halifax, N.S.) and Mary-Sophie Harvey (Trois-Rivières, Que.) began the day with a double podium in the women’s 200m individual medley. Pickrem swam to gold in a Pan American record time of 2:09.04 while Harvey picked up silver.
    • On the men’s side, Finlay Knox (Okotoks, Alta.) captured his fifth medal of these Games – gold in the men’s 200m individual medley.
    • Danielle Hanus (Newmarket, Ont.), Rachel Nicol (Lethbridge, Alta.), Maggie Mac Neil (London, Ont.) and Harvey swam to gold in the women’s 4x100m medley relay. That brought Mac Neil’s gold medal tally to five at Santiago 2023 — the most gold medals ever won by a Canadian athlete at a single Pan Am Games.  
    • Both Mac Neil and Harvey end their time at Santiago 2023 with seven medals apiece. No Canadian woman has ever won more medals at one edition of the Pan Am Games.
    • Team Canada men’s 4x100m medley relay team capped off the day with a bronze.
