Lindsey Butterworth

Biography

Lindsey Butterworth won the Canadian junior 1500m title in 2011 and then represented Team BC in the event at the 2013 Canada Summer Games. From 2011 to 2015, she ran collegiately for Simon Fraser University, winning NAIA bronze in the 1500m in 2011. As a senior in 2015, she won the NCAA DII 800m indoor and outdoor titles and represented Canada in the 800m at the Universiade.

Following her university career, Butterworth had a breakout year in 2017. She won 800m bronze for her first senior podium at the Canadian Championships. She then represented Canada at the Jeux de la Francophonie and made her debut at the World Athletics Championships. She took that momentum into 2018, winning her first national title in the 800m. She ended the season by running a then-personal best 2:00.81 at the NACAC Championships in Toronto.

In 2019, Butterworth represented Canada at both the Pan Am Games in Lima and the World Athletics Championships in Doha. She finished fifth in the 800m at the former and made the semifinals at the latter.

At the Canadian Olympic Trials in late June 2021, Butterworth broke through the two-minute barrier for the first time to win 800m gold, setting her personal best at 1:59.19. She made her Olympic debut at Tokyo 2020.
