Carson Mattern

Biography

Carson Mattern won gold at Santiago 2023 as a member of the men’s team pursuit that set a Pan American Games record time of 3:53.593. He also competed in the men’s road race at Santiago 2023 but did not finish. 

Mattern is a three-time junior world champion. He won two gold medals at the 2022 UCI Junior Track World Championships in the men’s individual pursuit and men’s omnium. That followed his gold in the men’s scratch race in 2021 when he also teamed with Dylan Bibic for bronze in the men’s Madison. 

Mattern competed at his first elite UCI Track World Championships in 2022. In 2023, he was part of Canada’s top-eight finish in the team pursuit at the worlds. He debuted on the UCI Nations Cup circuit in 2023. 

As a road cyclist, Mattern finished second in the junior men’s time trial and third in the junior men’s road race at the 2022 Canadian Road Cycling Championships.  

A Little More About Carson

Getting into the Sport: Started cycling as a sport when he was 11… Was inspired to reach the highest level after watching the 2017 UCI World Cup in Milton… At one time held the world junior record for the 3km individual pursuit… Outside Interests: Enjoys discovering new music from different regions and cultures, and lost/forgotten works… Started his undergrad at McMaster University in 2022 with the eventual goal of going to medical school… Involved with his local Rotary club in Ancaster… Odds and Ends: Has a small toy dog named Jimmy that he has had since he was born that he brings everywhere he travels… Likes to find local cafes during his travels and has begun to bring beans home as a reminder of where he’s been…
