Canada starts volleyball World League in Calgary

Volleyball Canada’s men’s team will start the 2015 FIVB Volleyball World League at home in Calgary from May 16 to 17.

A record, 32 nations will compete in the tournament in 2015, with Canada in Pool C alongside Argentina, Bulgaria and Cuba. These countries are part of 12 nations hoping to make the jump from Group 2 to Group 1 in 2016. Canada finished 13th in the 2014 season and didn’t make the Group 2 finals for a chance at promotion.

The 2015 season starts Saturday at the Stampede Corral in Calgary against Cuba.

2015 World League schedule 

May 16-17: Cuba (in Calgary)

May 30-31: Bulgaria

June 5-6: Argentina (in Halifax)

June 12-13: Bulgaria (in Summerside)

June 19-20: Cuba

June 27-28: Argentina

In Pool C, Canada must win or finish second to Bulgaria for a chance at the finals for promotion. As host, Bulgaria has automatic entry to the Final Round.

In between its first two World League ties, Canada takes part in a regional tournament in Detroit May 21-23 for a chance to qualify for the 2015 FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Cup in Japan.
