Derek Zandstra has been competing internationally since 2002 when he debuted at the UCI World Championships as a junior. He progressed to the U23 division in 2004 before becoming a member of the national team in 2005. He posted a career-high finish at the UCI World Championships in 2014 when he was the top Canadian man in 15th place. Zandstra made his Pan Am Games debut at Guadalajara 2011 where he finished eighth. After a string of podium placements, Zandstra broke through to win his first national title in 2013.

Family: Parents Dick and Evelyn Zandstra… Older sisters Carey Tait and Rosalee Gariepy… Wife Natalie Zandstra… Getting into the Sport: Started racing mountain bikes at age 14… Had grown up biking on trails with friends before his dad eventually signed him up for a race… Outside Interests: Enjoys exploring, watching movies, playing hockey, and hanging out with friends and family… Odds and Ends: Favourite motto: “Tap the Maple”…  Always travels with a cereal bowl, knife, and cutting board because you never know what you will have access to on the road… Collects fridge magnets for his mom from his travels…
