  • One of Canada’s brightest young stars in 2002 when he won the bronze medal and broke the Canadian record in the men’s 200m backstroke at the Pan Pacific Championships in Yokohama, Japan
  • Career highlight was at the U.S. Open when he upset double Olympic backstroke champion Lenny Krayzelburg (U.S.) for the gold in the 200 metre backstroke

  • Beavers had a disappointing year after the 2004 Olympic Games and considered retiring, but after turning to coaching, his love of the sport was rejuvenated

It is also just the third time that the Games will be held in the southern hemisphere, following Melbourne 1956 and Sydney 2000.
