COC President Michael Chambers Awarded the Olympic Order
The Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) congratulates Michael A. Chambers, who on March 1st received the Olympic Order for his significant contributions to the global Olympic Movement and to Canadian sport. Chambers has been COC President since 2001.
The Olympic Order, bestowed by the International Olympic Committee, is the highest award of the Olympic Movement.
Chambers, an Ottawa attorney with Maclaren Corlett, has had a long and distinguished career serving the global Olympic Movement. Before taking on the COC presidency, Chambers was, among many COC roles, vice-president and Executive Committee member (1990-2001), member and then chair of the Legal Affairs Committee from (1986-2001), member of the Anti-Doping Committee (1989-2001) and member then chair of the Team Selection Committee (1994-2001). He was Canada’s Chef de Mission for the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games.
Chambers was a vice-chair of the Vancouver 2010 Bid Corporation and is a board member of the Vancouver 2010 Organizing Committee. He is also president of the Sport Venues Commission of the Association of National Olympic Committees. In 2006, Chambers was appointed to be a member of the International Olympic Committee’s 2014 Olympic Winter Games Working Group, which short-listed those cities that applied to host the 2014 Olympic Winter Games.
In October 2008, Chambers became the first Canadian to be elected vice-president of the Pan American Sport Organization.
