Groves and Christie Announce Retirements
This week we feature Canadian athletes Kristina Groves and Jeff Christie who announced their retirements from speed skating and luge, respectively.
Speed skater Kristina Groves tearfully announced her retirement from the sport at the age of 34, marking the end of an incredible career. From 2005 to 2010, Groves won a total of 18 World Championship medals including three gold. Her tremendous success earned her the accolade of being Canada’s most decorated skater in the World Single Distance Championships. Groves represented Canada at the Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City, Turin, and Vancouver, winning a total of three silver medals and one bronze. Perhaps Groves will best be remembered for the two Olympic medals she won in front of thousands of Canadian fans at Vancouver 2010.
Accomplished Canadian luge athlete Jeff Christie announced this week that he will be pursuing a career in brewing. A two-time Olympian, Christie’s competition circuit took him all over the world. Inspired by tasting beer throughout his world travels, Christie’s dream is to open a micro-brewery in Calgary. The Olympian recognizes and has discussed the importance of obtaining a degree before he can pursue his dream. Christie will be moving to Victoria to begin a bachelor of commerce at Royal Roads University.
The Canadian Olympic Committee would like to congratulate both of these athletes on their remarkable careers and wishes them the best of luck moving forward.
