Now it’s time to see what played out when the instruction went the other way.
Yes, Black put on a weightlifting singlet and stepped up to the barbell to see what she could learn and accomplish under the watchful eye of the Olympic champion.
“I definitely didn’t think I was going to lift as much as I did,” Black said after their session.
“You lifted about 85 pounds, which is pretty cool,” Charron chimed in.
“Yeah, it is pretty cool. And especially the clean and jerk. I have really bad wrist flexibility, so I was also unsure about that,” added Black. “I did something that I was unsure of and didn’t think I was going to be able to do today, which is pretty fun.”
While Black doesn’t have prior experience with Olympic-style weightlifting, her years of being a high performance athlete definitely proved beneficial.
“Ellie is an athlete already, so you tell her one cue and she knows exactly what to do, which is golden for a coach,” said Charron. “If I say ‘chest open’ at the start position, she knows what chest open means. She knows how to keep the core engaged and how to keep her back protected and everything protected. It’s natural.”
“I think coming from gymnastics, where there’s so much body awareness […] definitely helps me to be able to know those little cues and be aware of the different body parts. And knowing that when you say one thing, it doesn’t mean I forget about everything else,” said Black.
