Canada’s Tokyo 2020 archery team announced
TORONTO (June 28, 2021) – On Monday, Archery Canada and the Canadian Olympic Committee announced Stephanie Barrett and Crispin Duenas as Canada’s archery team nominated to compete at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
Barrett (Mississauga, Ont.) qualified for her first Olympic Games, following her second-place finish at the American Continental Qualifier event in Monterrey, Mexico in March 2021.
“Competing at the Olympic Games for Team Canada has been a dream since I was very young,” said Barrett. “With all the hard work and the love and support of so many amazing people, that dream will finally become reality this year in Tokyo. It has been an honour wearing the maple leaf and I’m thrilled to be able to represent Canada and compete for a spot on the podium!”
Barrett started archery in 2016 at the Ontario Centre for Classical Sport and quickly became accomplished in the sport. She was crowned Canadian champion only two years later at the Canadian National Championships in Truro, Nova Scotia. In 2019, she attended the World Ranking event in Santiago, Chile, her first international competition. Later that same year, she was named to Team Canada for the Lima 2019 Pan American Games where she finished fourth in the mixed team competition and 17th in the individual competition.
Joining Barrett will be veteran Olympian Crispin Duenas (Scarborough, Ont.). Tokyo 2020 will mark Duenas’s fourth Olympic Games, as he also competed at Beijing 2008, London 2012 and Rio 2016.
“It’s an honour to have been selected to my fourth Olympic Games,” said Duenas. “The training and dedication put in over the past five years are really showing, and I’m glad to have a reliable teammate like Stephanie to shoot the first-ever Olympic mixed team competition.”
Since starting archery over two decades ago, Duenas has been on the national team for 17 years. Duenas made his international debut at the Junior World Championships in 2002 and has since competed in multiple World Cups, two indoor World Championships, 10 outdoor World Championships, and four Pan American Games in addition to his three Olympic Games. His most recent major title was at Lima 2019 where he won gold in the individual men’s recurve and as part of the men’s recurve team. Combining his junior and senior years, Duenas holds 24 national records.
Archery will take place July 23 to July 31 (Days 1 to 9) at the Yumenoshima Park.
“I’ve known Crispin for a long time and am grateful that he has taken the time to teach me about the endurance and strength that is required for an archery tournament; the accuracy and skill is obvious,” said Team Canada’s Tokyo 2020 Chef de Mission, Marnie McBean. ”I’m sure that Stephanie will have a great mentor and guide in Tokyo as she begins her Olympic career.”
The athletes and coaches nominated are:
- Stephanie Barrett (Mississauga, Ont.) – Individual Women’s Recurve and Mixed Team
- Crispin Duenas (Scarborough, Ont.) – Individual Men’s Recurve and Mixed Team
- Shawn Riggs (Kitchener, Ont.) – National Coach
Prior to being named to Team Canada, all nominations are subject to approval by the Canadian Olympic Committee’s Team Selection Committee following its receipt of nominations by all National Sport Organisations.
