Canadian Olympic Committee statement on COVID-19 and Beijing 2022
TORONTO (January 19, 2022) — The following statement is the Canadian Olympic Committee’s latest position on the impact of COVID-19 and the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games:
“The safety of Team Canada – including athletes, coaches and support staff – is always a priority no matter where the Games are held. For all health related matters we are guided by our Chief Medical Officer, Team Canada’s Sport Medicine Advisory Committee (SMAC), and the IOC’s medical team.
“The IOC, BOCOG and Chinese public health officials are working extremely hard to keep Games participants and the people of China safe during a very difficult period in the COVID-19 pandemic. Team Canada is committed to following all the guidelines in the Beijing 2022 Playbooks. We are working closely with IOC and BOCOG to ensure that members of Team Canada who have recovered from COVID are able to compete while meeting Chinese public health regulations. It is important to note that although the frequent testing in Beijing is designed to identify infections early and prevent transmission, it is not meant to unjustly exclude those with false positives or who have recovered from COVID but are persistent shedders. The IOC and BOCOG have implemented the multinational Medical Expert Panel (MEP) to scientifically review these potential cases.”
