TEAM CANADA DAY 1 MOMENTS:

HOCKEY – WOMEN’S

• Team Canada played its first game of the women’s hockey tournament, defeating Team Switzerland 4-0

LONG TRACK SPEED SKATING

• Valérie Maltais (Saguenay, Que.) won Team Canada’s first medal of the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic Winter Games, a bronze in the women’s 3000m at the Milano Speed Skating Stadium.
  
• This is Maltais’ first individual medal.
  
• At Beijing 2022, Maltais won gold in the women’s team pursuit alongside Isabelle Weidemann (Ottawa, Ont.) and Ivanie Blondin (Ottawa, Ont.). That followed her silver medal in the women’s 3000m relay in short track speed skating at Sochi 2014. She was the first Canadian speed skater to ever win Olympic medals in both long track and short track.
