TEAM CANADA INSIGHTS:
ATHLETICS

  • Sarah Mitton (Brooklyn, N.S.) qualified for the women’s shot put final with the best throw (19.77m) of the qualification round.
  • Canada’s men’s and women’s 4x100m relay teams also both advanced to their respective finals. The women set a national record of 42.50 seconds, breaking a mark that had stood since 2015.

BEACH VOLLEYBALL

  • Melissa Humana-Paredes (Toronto, Ont.) and Brandie Wilkerson (Toronto, Ont.) defeated Tanja Hueberli and Nina Brunner of Switzerland to advance to the gold medal match. This guarantees Canada its first Olympic medal in women’s beach volleyball.

TAEKWONDO:

  • Skylar Park (Winnipeg, Man.) won bronze in the women’s 57kg event to become Canada’s first Olympic medallist in the event. This is Canada’s third Olympic medal in taekwondo since the sport made its debut at Sydney 2000. Dominique Bosshart captured bronze in the women’s +67kg at those Games while Karine Sergerie took silver in the women’s 67kg at Beijing 2008.

WEIGHTLIFTING:

  • Maude Charron (Rimouski, Que.) won silver in the women’s 59kg event to become the second Canadian weightlifter to win two Olympic medals. Christine Girard won bronze at Beijing 2008 and gold at London 2012.
  • She matched her Canadian record with a total of 236kg lifted.
  • Charron came to Paris as an Olympic gold medallist, having won the 64kg event at Tokyo 2020. The event was subsequently removed from the Olympic programme, compelling Charron to drop down a weight class.
