TEAM CANADA INSIGHTS:
BOXING:
- Wyatt Sanford (Kennetcook, N.S.) is guaranteed to be Canada’s first Olympic medallist in boxing in 28 years after his quarterfinal victory in the men’s 63.5 kg event today. The last Canadian boxer to win an Olympic medal was David Defiagbon who won silver at Atlanta 1996 as a heavyweight.
FENCING:
- Canada achieved its best ever Olympic result in the women’s team foil with a fourth place finish. The previous best in the event was fifth at Tokyo 2020. This matches Canada’s best Olympic result in any team fencing event.
SWIMMING:
- Summer McIntosh (Toronto, Ont.) became Canada’s first-ever Olympic medallist in the women’s 200m butterfly as she won gold in Olympic record time of 2:03.03. The 17-year-old is the first Canadian swimmer since Alex Baumann at Los Angeles 1984 – and just the third Canadian swimmer all time – to win two gold medals at one Olympic Games. She is the first Canadian woman to win two individual gold medals in one Olympic Summer Games.
TENNIS:
- Having already achieved the best ever Olympic singles result by a Canadian tennis player by reaching the quarterfinals, Félix Auger-Aliassime (Montreal, Que.) advanced to the semifinal round of the men’s singles event with his win over sixth-seeded Casper Ruud of Norway. He is now guaranteed to play in a medal match.
- Not long after, Auger-Aliassime and Gabriela Dabrowski lost their mixed doubles semifinal which means they will play in the bronze medal match on Friday.
