Lorne Wigginton

Biography

Lorne Wigginton debuted at the World Aquatics Championships in 2023 where, at the age of 17, he was the youngest man on the Canadian swimming team. He set a Canadian age group (15-17) record of 4:13.75 in the men’s 400m individual medley as he missed advancing to the final by one spot, finishing ninth overall. Later that year, he won bronze medals in both the 200m and 400m IMs at the World Aquatics Junior Swimming Championships and finished fourth in the 400m freestyle.

At the 2024 World Aquatics Championships, Wigginton advanced to the 400m IM final, placing seventh. He qualified to make his Olympic debut at Paris 2024 by finishing third in the men’s 200m freestyle at the 2024 Canadian Olympic Trials, earning him a spot on the men’s 4x200m freestyle relay team.

Wigginton represented Canada at the 2022 Junior Pan Pacific Championships, reaching the final in all seven of his events. In the fall of 2022, he competed at the Toronto leg of the Swimming World Cup, which was highlighted by his fifth-place finish in the 800m freestyle. 

In March 2023, Wigginton won silver in the 400m IM at the Pro Swim Series meet in Fort Lauderdale. Two months later, he finished third in the 400m IM at the Monte Carlo leg of the Mare Nostrum tour.

Getting into the Sport: Started swimming at age 6 because his parents wanted him to learn water safety… Has wanted to compete for Canada since watching Canadian swimmers win medals at London 2012… Outside Interests: Enjoys golfing, watching movies and playing video games with friends… Would like to become a Geological Engineer… Odds and Ends: Listens to the same song before every race until he has a bad one, after which he will change to a different song… Likes to buy a hat of the baseball team from each city in which he competes… Favourite quote: “He never got a tight-end like me” -Charles Barkley…
