Thompson adds to Olympic gold with world title

Olympic ski cross champion Marielle Thompson has added to her Sochi gold medal by winning the Crystal Globe to take the world title on Sunday.

Thompson had a five-point lead on Fanny Smith of Switzerland heading into the final World Cup race of the season at La Plagne, France. She edged her Swiss rival for gold, while fellow Canadian Georgia Simmerling won bronze.

Smith had an early lead in the race but Thompson made up ground on way to her third World Cup victory of the season.  In the end Thompson’s 755 points from the 2013-14 World Cup calendar was 25 better than Smith in the overall title race.

The Canadian skier earlier won this season’s World Cup races in Alberta at the Nakiska resort and on her previous trip to France at Val Thorens.
