A short breakdown of Canada’s first Diving World Series

A short breakdown of Canada’s first Diving World Series

By Callum Ng

For the first time the Diving World Series is in Canada. The season’s second-to-last stop is Windsor and features six Canadians.

Who’s there?

Four women will threaten the podium. Olympic medallists Jennifer Abel, Meaghan Benfeito and Roseline Filion with relative newcomer Pamela Ware. Two gentlemen will also dive, two-time Olympian Riley McCormick and 18-year-old Vincent Riendeau.

Which events?

The World Series is a prestigious event featuring the very best divers. 2013 World Champs bronze medallist Pam Ware and Jennifer Abel compete in the 3m springboard. They also do 3m synchro together. Meaghan Benfeito and Roseline Filion will leap off the 10m tower, both individually and together.

McCormick will go off the board this week, with Riendeau entered in the 10m. Canada doesn’t have any men’s synchro in the World Series.

Why is this important?

On the women’s side, Canada has four divers who are all very good. Individually, Meaghan Benfeito and Roseline Filion are top-5 in the world, as are both synchro teams. And that’s considering they’ve only been to three of four World Series so far. Benfeito has a silver medal from the London stop. Ware won a bronze. The synchro teams have medalled multiple times.

But they’re all chasing the Chinese. He Zi is tops on the board and Lui Huixia on platform. China’s synchro teams are unbeaten in World Series competition this season.

Where can I watch?

If you live in Windsor, or nearby, we recommend watching at the pool. Everything is better live. If not, both Sportsnet and RDS will be replaying the action very soon. You can also follow Olympic.ca or @CDNOlympicTeam for results.
