From February 12-21 2016, young athletes from all corners of the globe will gather in Lillehammer, Norway for the second edition of the Winter Youth Olympic Games.

In 2020, the capital city of Japan will host the Games of the XXXII Olympiad. This will be the second time that the Olympic Games will take place in Tokyo, which previously welcomed the world in 1964.

Rio 2016

History was made in 2016 when Rio de Janeiro, Brazil hosted the Games of the XXXI Olympiad, marking the first time that a South American country welcomed the world to an Olympic Games. It was also just the third time that the Games were held in the southern hemisphere, following Melbourne 1956 and Sydney 2000.

In June 1922, the French Olympic Committee (hosts of the 1924 Olympic Games in Paris), held a congress with representatives from skiing, skating, and ice hockey. A motion was passed to stage “International Sports Week 1924” in Chamonix. Although not originally called Olympic Games, the competitions were under the patronage of the International Olympic Committee.

St. Moritz was selected to host the second Olympic Winter Games after it was determined that the Netherlands, hosts of the summer Olympic Games of 1928, would be unable to also organize the Winter Games. Canada was represented in speed skating, figure skating, ski jumping, cross-country skiing, and Nordic combined, but once again the only medal for the 23-member team came in ice hockey.

The small village of Lake Placid in upstate New York beat out several other American towns as well as Montreal for the right to host the 1932 Olympic Winter Games. Canada’s seven total medals placed the country behind only the United States and Norway and was a national Winter Olympic record that went unmatched until 1992.

After Berlin was awarded the 1936 Olympic Games, Germany exercised its right to also host the 1936 Olympic Winter Games, choosing the Bavarian resort of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, an amalgamation of two towns on either side of the River Partnach. Canada’s only medal once again came in ice hockey, but for the first time it wasn’t gold.
