Event Details

Games of the IV Olympiad
These Olympic Games were originally awarded to Rome, but reassigned to London. The Games marked the first appearance of diving and field hockey. At the Opening Ceremony, the athletes marched into the stadium by nation, as most countries sent selected national teams.

Canada’s 91athletes won medals in athletics (six), cycling (one), lacrosse (one), rowing (two), shooting (four) and wrestling (one), for a total of 15. Three double-medallists emerged from these Games: Robert Kerr, 200m gold and 100m bronze; Walter Ewing, gold in clay pigeon shooting and silver in team; and George Beattie, silver in clay pigeon and team. This was the first time Canada stood first and second on the same podium and it took 90 years before it happened again in Nagano with Catriona Le May Doan and Susan Auch in 500m Speed Skating. Canada won its second consecutive Olympic gold medal in lacrosse.
