Canadians Collect Crystal Globes: Four Canadian athletes collected the coveted Crystal Globe, emblematic of the World Cup overall championship in their discipline: Erik Guay (Alpine Skiing – Super-G), Jenn Heil (Freestyle Skiing – Moguls), Maëlle Ricker (Snowboard – Snowboard Cross) and Kristina Groves (Speed Skating – 1,500 m). Guay’s title was the first by a Canadian alpine skier since 2010 Assistant Chef de Mission Steve Podborski’s 1982 downhill title.
Three Cities Vie for 2018 Winter Games: The cities of Munich (Germany), Annecy (France), and PyeongChang (Republic of Korea), have submitted their applications to the IOC for the right to host the 2018 Olympic Winter Games. The IOC Evaluation Commission will visit the candidate cities in February and March 2011 and the host will be named July 6 of that year.
Ski Cross Women Sweep Podium: For the first time in history, three Canadian women topped a World Cup Ski Cross podium. Kelsey Serwa (gold), Ashleigh McIvor (silver) and Danielle Poleschuk (bronze) dominated the historic race in Switzerland. Chris Del Bosco added to the Canadian medal haul with a bronze on the men’s side.
Two Hurdle Medals at World Indoor Championships: Canadian hurdlers Perdita Felicien and Priscilla Lopes-Schliep took silver and bronze, respectively, at the 2010 IAAF World Indoor Championships in Doha, Qatar. Shot putter Dylan Armstrong set a Canadian record with a throw of 21.39 m, good for 4th place.
Anderson Notches Milestone Podium: 2010 Olympic champion Jasey Jay Anderson earned his 60th World Cup podium in Italy—a bronze medal in parallel giant slalom. Canada’s most decorated snowboarder, Anderson has collected four FIS World Championship titles, six Crystal Globes including four Overall titles, 26 World Cup victories and his Olympic gold medal since his World Cup debut in 1996.
Wotherspoon Retires: Canadian Speed Skating legend Jeremy Wotherspoon has announced his retirement from the sport. One of the most accomplished sprinters in the sport’s history, Wotherspoon is a four-time Olympian and a 1998 Olympic silver medallist, as well as the world record holder in the 500 m. He won three world titles in that distance and four sprint world championships.
