Canada punches ticket to LA 2028 in women’s volleyball at NORCECA qualifier
On Saturday, Canada defeated the Dominican Republic with a 3-1 win (25-15, 20-25, 25-23, 25-14) at the NORCECA Women’s Continental Olympic Qualification Tournament at the Prof. Ricardo Gioriver Arias Volleyball Palace, to secure its spot at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
The Canadian women’s volleyball team will return to the Olympic Games for the first time since Atlanta 1996, ending a 32-year absence from the Olympic stage.
Canada’s Kiera Van Ryk and Alexa Gray led all scorers with 22 points apiece. Canada led in attack points (56-40) and blocks (8-7).
The qualification comes just one day after Canada opened the tournament with a dominant victory over Puerto Rico. The Canadians swept Puerto Rico in straight sets, winning 25-16, 25-22, 25-10 in their best-of-five match.
Canada led in attacks 42-32, aces 4-2, gained more points from errors 17-12, and dominated in blocks 12-2.
Cuba defeated Puerto Rico in straight sets to finish third earlier Saturday.
The result continued the momentum Canada built after capturing its first-ever gold medal at the 2026 NORCECA Women’s Continental Volleyball Championship. Canada defeated the United States 3-2 (25-23, 25-23, 20-25, 18-25, 15-10) in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
Canada went undefeated with a 5-0 record in this tournament, another first, and earned its 14th medal in the history of the event. Canada has now won 14 medals in the history of this event, including one gold, two silver, and 11 bronze medals.
The Canadian women’s team finished tied for ninth at the Atlanta Games in 1996.
