Her gold medal in Vancouver and silver at the Winter X Games have earned her a nomination for the Best Female Action Athlete award, presented by the American sports network. Whyte Overcomes Hurdles: Two-time Olympian Angela Whyte took gold in the 100-metre hurdles event at the Harry Jerome International Track Classic in Burnaby, B.C. Whyte is on the comeback trail after rehabbing sore knees that have bothered her the last two seasons. Whyte edged fellow Olympian Jessica Zelinka who is also on a comeback of sorts, after missing last season for the birth of her first child last spring.
Rowers in Switzerland: Team Canada arrived in Lucerne, Switzerland, this week ready to face top crews from the world’s most powerful rowing nations at the third World Cup of the year July 9 to 11, 2010. Canada brought home two gold medals (women’s pair and men’s lightweight double) and a bronze (men’s four) at World Cup 1 in Bled. For the second World Cup in Munich, only single sculler Malcolm Howard competed – making the A finals and finishing sixth overall.
Canada’s Best Ryder at the Tour: Two-time Canadian Olympian Ryder Hesjedal is making his mark on the Tour de France. The 29-year-old from Victoria, B.C. placed 3rd in Stage 3, placing him 4th overall. Look for Hesjedal and fellow Canadian Michael Barry all this month in the most prestigious cycling race in the world.
Harnett Becomes 2011 Assistant Chef de Mission: Three-time Olympic medallist and two-time Pan American Games medallist Curt Harnett was named Assistant Chef de Mission for Canada at the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico. Harnett, Canada’s most decorated cyclist, will join Canada’s Chef de Mission and fencing great Jacques Cardyn in supporting the country’s athletes and coaches as they strive for the podium in this unique and important international event in October 2011.
Canadian Is One Of “The Best of Us”: Jeremy Shew, a 16 year old from Victoria, B.C. won a trip for two to Singapore for the Youth Olympic Games this August, after being randomly selected from among those who submitted videos to “The Best of Us Challenge.” This International Olympic Committee initiative engaged young people in the Olympic Games by giving them a chance to actually compete with Olympic athletes in an online forum. Working Together Against Doping: The International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers and Associations (IFPMA) and the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) signed a Joint Declaration on Cooperation in the Fight against Doping in Sport. The Declaration aims to facilitate voluntary cooperation between WADA and IFPMA member companies, to identify medicinal compounds with doping potential, minimize misuse of medicines still in development, improve the flow of relevant information and facilitate development of detection methods in the context of the fight against doping in sport.
