Swimmer Van Beilen Captures Full Medal Collection
Canada added to its medal count in the pool on a day with a couple podium near-misses. Basketball playoffs begin Saturday and athletics is on the horizon, as swimming winds down in Singapore.
Swimming: Tera Van Beilen (Oakville, Ont.) joined teammate Rachel Nicol as the only three-time Canadian Youth Olympic medallists, earning silver in the 200 m breaststroke. “It’s crazy. Now I have a gold, a silver and a bronze,” Van Beilen said. “It’s been incredibly exciting and I’ve treasured every moment.” Nicol finished just off the podium in fourth place in that same race. Friday was the last day of the Youth Olympic swim meet. Canadian swimmers finished with seven medals – two gold, one silver and four bronze.
Gymnastics: Mariah Madigan (Richmond Hill, Ont.) put on a great show at the women’s trampoline event, earning fourth place. “I’m a little disappointed now,” Madigan said. “But I’m sure I will be okay with it a little later. I thought I had a good routine—way better than in qualifying.” Curtis Gerein (Kelowna, B.C.) made the men’s final finishing seventh. “It was so great, the best routine I’ve had all year,” Gerein said. “I guess it was a really good time to do that.”
Equestrian: Dominique Shone’s (Langley, B.C.) North and Central American team finished sixth in the team jumping event. Shone, riding Roxy Girl, earned only four of her team’s 32 penalties, including a clean run in Round 2 Friday. “I just kept her head up and kept her clean,” she said. “I’m really happy with today and it gives me confidence for the individual competition,” which starts Sunday at the Singapore Turf Club Riding Centre.
