Women’s Soccer team making history
For the first time, in Canadian Olympic history, the women’s Soccer team will play in a semifinal match. To sweeten the story, it’s the Americans they await on Monday at 2:45 p.m.
Canada beat host Great Britain 2-0 on Friday to earn their spot with goals from Jonelle Filigno and captain Christine Sinclair.
“It kind of went better than expected,” said Sinclair. “We got two and we’re just on a roll from there.”
At 29, Sinclair is an international star and the veteran of this squad.
In round robin play, Canada also beat South Africa 3-0, tied Sweden 2-2 and lost to Japan in nail biting 2-1 battle. Now the women must look ahead to their next match against the United States, their biggest North American rivals.
“We know each other so well. There are no secrets. We need to play well defensively and score on our opportunities,” said Sinclair. “The U.S. is probably the best team in the world right now. They’re on a roll. They’re scary but we’ll be as prepared as possible we owe them one.”
