Day 14 Highlights
The 14th day of Olympic competition started well in the open water as Richard Weinberger, the 22 year old from Surrey, BC took bronze in the men’s 10km open water swim in the Serpentine, boosting Canada’s medal count to 17.

Wrestling
On the wrestling mats Friday, Matt Gentry of Burnaby, BC made his way into the bronze medal match, but was defeated 3-0 by Denis Tsargush of Russia in the  -74kg class just missing the podium. “I’m proud,” said Gentry. “I definitely gave my everything. It’s our team motto this year. I’m definitely proud of the way I competed and the way I prepared.”

Canoe-Kayak
At Eton Dorney, all the Canadian men made it through to Saturday’s final races. Mark de Jonge of Dartmouth, NS, won his semi-final heat in the K-1 200m, while Jason McCoombs, also of Dartmouth, NS, qualified for final B in the C-1 200m individual canoe event. In the K-2 200m Hugues Fournel, of Dorval QC, and Ryan Cochrane of Windsor, NS finished fourth in their semi-final heat and will compete in the A finals. Emilie Fournel of Dorval, QC competed in the semi-finals this morning, but did not qualify for the finals in the K1 200m kayak sprint.

Taekwondo
It was a tough day for Olympic silver medallist Karine Sergerie of Montreal in the women’s -67kg class, being defeated in the quarter-finals by Franka Anic of Slovenia 10-5. On the men’s side, Sébastien Michaud of Quebec City lost to Arman Yeremyan of Armenia during preliminary action in the men’s -80kg class.

Athletics
At the track Friday night, the men’s 4X100m relay squad ran a season’s best performance to secure a spot in the premier Athletics final Saturday night. Gavin Smellie (Etobicoke, ON), Oluseyi Smith (Ottawa, ON), Justyn Warner (Markham, ON) and Jared Connaughton (New Haven, PEI) stopped the clock in 38.05 seconds.

Rhythmic Gymnastics
In Canada’s Olympic debut in the team event, the women’s team sits in 11th position after the second rotation. They will compete in the final rotation Sunday.

Synchronized Swimming
At the Aquatics Centre, Canada’s women hit the pool to compete in the team event. They ended the day after the final free routine in fourth place with a score of 189.630.

Diving
In preliminary 10m platform diving action Riley McCormick of Victoria, BC earned  452.75 points for 11th spot in the semifinal Saturday at 5 a.m. EST. Eric Sehn of Edmonton, AB collected 363.90 points for 29th spot and did not qualify.
