Canada matches best-ever gold medal total at Pan Pacific Championships
Alexanne Lepage’s victory in the women’s 200-metre breaststroke capped a solid weekend for Team Canada at the Pan Pacific Championships in Irvine, California.
Canada matched their best-ever gold medal haul at the championships, and brought home 13 medals total, their best performance since 1997.
Calgary’s Lepage captured her first senior individual international medal, and her first international victory, with her time of 2:21:73.
Summer McIntosh’s Pan Pacific Championships concluded with a silver in the women’s 200-metre individual medley with a time of 2:07.47.
Earlier in the meet, McIntosh captured gold in the women’s 400-metre individual medley, shattering the Pan Pacific Championships record. She also claimed silver in the 200-metre freestyle, and pushed Canada to a bronze medal in the women’s 4×200-metre freestyle relay, bringing her medal total at the championships to four.
Taylor Ruck leaves the Pan Pacific Championships with five medals – three individual – with her final performance on Saturday setting her second Canadian record of the week in the women’s 50-metre freestyle.
Ruck also teamed up with Calgary’s Ingrid Wilm, Lepage and McIntosh to finish fourth in the 4×100 medley relay with a time of 3:56.84.
Reina Liu, Sophie Angus, Leilani Fack and Leah Tigert were seventh with a time of 4:01.71.
Blake Tierney earned silver in the men’s 200m backstroke on Friday night with a time of 1:56.29. His teammate, Ethan Ekk, also made it onto the podium, finishing third in 1:56.85.
The Canadian men’s 4x100m medley squad of Tierney, Oliver Dawson, Finlay Knox, and Ruslan Gaziev finished fourth, posting a combined time of 3:34.08.
Earlier in the meet Dawson broke a record of his own, shaving his 50m breaststroke time by one hundredth of a second.
Canada’s final medal of Friday evening came from the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay.
The quartet of Ruck, Mary-Sophie Harvey, Leah Tigert and Leilani Fack earned a bronze medal after completing the event in a time of 3:36:44.
