Maple Leaf Moments: Challenging for the Podium

Challenging for the podium: On February 14, 2014 women’s Skeleton will conclude in Sochi with 2006 Olympic bronze medallist Mellisa Hollingsworth (Eckville, AB) and recent 2013 World Championship bronze medallist Sarah Reid (Calgary, AB) hoping to channel Jon Montgomery’s (Russell, MN) gold-medal run on the seventh day of competition in Vancouver.

On this day: Catriona Le May Doan and Susan Auch showed the world how dominant Canadians are in long track Speed Skating by finishing first and second, respectively, in the women’s 500m event in Nagano in 1998. The gold for Le May Doan made her the first Canadian woman to ever win Olympic gold in long track Speed Skating.

A member of the Crazy Canucks Alpine team and the 2014 Chef de Mission for the Canadian Winter Olympic Team, Steve Podborski (Toronto, ON) wins bronze in the men’s downhill event in Lake Placid on 1980.

In, 2006 Sara Renner (Canmore, AB) and Beckie Scott (Vermilion, AB) team up to win silver in the ladies’ Cross-Country Skiing team sprint event in Turin. Canada has great medal hopes for the men’s team sprint at Sochi 2014, thanks to Sudbury, ON’s Devon Kershaw and St-Ferrol, QC’s Alex Harvey who won gold at the 2011 World Championships after their fourth place finish at Vancouver 2010.
