Skaters Shine at Short Track Worlds
Canada’s short track speed skaters emphasized Canada’s reputation as a powerhouse in the sport with five top-three results Sunday, including a world title.
The team of Michael Gilday, (Yellowknife, NWT) Charles Hamelin, (Saint-Julie, QC) Olivier Jean (Lachenaie, QC) and Charle Cournoyer (Boucherville, Que) blasted to gold in the 5000m relay at the ISU World Short Track Speed Skating Championships in Debrecen, Hungary, following a pair of third-place performances from Hamelin in the 3000m and 1000m individual events.
After securing a third-place performance in the 3000m individual event, St. Félicien, QC’s Marianne St-Gelais led the relay team in that same distance to capture a silver medal with Marie-Ève Drolet, (Laterrière, QC) Valérie Maltais (La Baie, QC) and Jessica Hewitt (Kamloops, BC).
