USA beats Canada at rugby sevens Olympic qualifier
Canada fell 21-5 to the United States in the final of 2015 NACRA Sevens, missing their chance for a regional berth at Rio 2016.
It was the expected final in Cary, North Carolina, with both teams going 4-and-0 including semifinal wins. Canada outscored their opponents 204-7 and outlasted Mexico in a semi, while the Eagles got past Cayman in the other semi, and beat up all-comers 204-5.
The USA jumped out to a quick start, leading 21-0 at the half. The only Canadian try was scored by North Vancouver’s Harry Jones in the second half, with the kick hitting the wrong side of the post.
Canada has one more chance to qualify for Rio 2016 becoming one of 16 teams bound for World Repechage next year. The US joins host Brazil, Fiji, South Africa, New Zealand, Great Britain and Argentina as the teams already assured a spot in the Olympic tournament.
