Canadian Roundup: Medals won and history made

It was a busy weekend for Canada on the international stage with three World Cup medals, two historic performances and a tennis title.

From the ice tracks in Lake Placid to the sunny courts of Sydney, Canadians watched their favourite Olympians make history.

Daniel Nestor - 1000 wins

Olympic champion Daniel Nestor became the first doubles player to log 1000 wins in ATP World Tour world history.  Nestor and partner Marcelo Melo defeated Jeremy Chardy and Leander Paes 6-4, 6-4 in Sydney on early Monday morning.

Milos Raonic won his shot at redemption in the Brisbane International final on Sunday. After losing to Federer in the final the previous year, Raonic came back to beat his rival 6-4, 6-4 to secure the title and his first win of 2016.

It was an exciting weekend at the BMW IBSF World Cup in Lake Placid. Justin Kripps, Alex Kopacz, Derek Plug and Ben Coakwell earned their first four-man medal in the World Cup circuit after winning bronze on Saturday.

History was made as Kaillie Humphries, Cynthia Appiah, Genevieve Thibault and Melissa Lotholz became the first all-women crew to race in the four-man event. Humphries and Lotholz also brought home a silver medal in women’s bobsleigh.

Larisa Yurkiw is back on a FIS Alpine Skiing World Cup podium after finishing second in sprint downhill skiing in Altenmarkt-Zauchensee, Austria. Yurkiw’s first World Cup podium appearance of the season was a third place finish in the Val d’Isere in December.
