Humphries and Lotholz race to the top in Park City

Kaillie Humphries and Melissa Lotholz have won gold in Park City, Utah to make it five World Cup podiums – including three wins – this season.

On the fifth stop of the BMW IBSF World Cup circuit the Canadian duo went into the women’s bobsleigh event eager to improve its second place finish from last weekend. After completing their first run in 50.29 seconds, the team was only 0.02s behind Austrian leaders Christina Hengster and Sanne Dekker.

With only 0.09s separating the top three teams, competitors geared up for a fast second run. The Canadians had a powerful start of 5.23s and were the only sled to improve their time on the second run finishing in 50.09s for a total combined time of 1 minute 40.38s. Next up were the Austrians, who despite improving their push time to 5.30s were unable to surpass the Canadians’ impressive second run.

This isn’t the end of competition for the Canadian power duo in Utah. Last week Humphries and Lotholz made history with Cynthia Appiah and Genevieve Thibault as the first all-women four man bobsleigh crew in the World Cup. They will have two chances to compete this weekend. The four-man competitions will take place on Friday at 8:00 p.m. ET and Saturday at 7:00 p.m. ET, live streams can be found at CBCsports.ca.
