Connor McDavid

Biography

Connor McDavid is set to make his Olympic debut at Milano Cortina 2026.

McDavid had been one of the three players initially selected to Team Canada for the men’s hockey tournament at Beijing 2022 before the NHL determined that it would not participate because of scheduling impacts related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

McDavid was an alternate captain of Team Canada at the 4 Nations Face-Off in 2025. He finished second in tournament scoring with three goals and two assists. He scored the championship-clinching goal in overtime of the final against Team USA.

McDavid has represented Canada at two IIHF World Championships. With Canada’s gold medal in 2016, he became (at age 19) the youngest player to win gold at the U18 World Championship, U20 World Championship, and World Championship. In the 2016 gold medal game, he scored what would be the eventual game-winning goal. McDavid served as team captain at the 2018 IIHF World Championship and was Canada’s leading scorer (third in the tournament) with five goals and 12 assists as the team finished fourth.

McDavid first represented Canada at the 2013 IIHF World U18 Championship where the team won gold. He was named Most Valuable Player and Top Forward after leading the tournament in scoring with 14 points (eight goals and six assists). He went on to compete at the IIHF World Junior (U20) Championship in 2014 and 2015, winning gold at the latter where he was third in tournament scoring with three goals and eight assists.

McDavid was selected first overall by the Edmonton Oilers in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft. He has played there through the 2024-25 season. He was named team captain just before the 2016-17 season, becoming the youngest captain in NHL history at 19 years and 266 days.

McDavid won the Conn Smythe Trophy as the MVP of the Stanley Cup Playoffs in 2024, despite the Oilers losing in the final to the Florida Panthers.

McDavid capped off the 2022-23 season with multiple individual awards, including the Art Ross Trophy (most points), Hart Memorial Trophy (most valuable player), Ted Lindsay Award (most outstanding player), Maurice Richard Trophy (most goals). It was the fifth time he had led the NHL in scoring (2017, 2018, 2021, 2022, 2023). It was his third Hart Trophy (2017, 2021, 2023; voted by members of the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association) and his fourth Ted Lindsay Award (2017, 2018, 2021, 2023; voted by members of the NHLPA).
