OTTAWA – With just 120 days to go until London 2012, the Canadian Olympic Committee heartily applauds the Harper Government’s continued support of the athletes and National Sport Federations that carry the weight of Canada’s Olympic hopes on their shoulders. The Economic Action Plan 2012: Jobs, Growth and Long-Term Prosperity released today continues delivering funding to the areas of high-performance sport where it can be of most on-the-ground benefit to the sport community and to Canada’s hopes of owning the podium at London 2012, Sochi 2014 and beyond.
“During periods of global economic challenge, financial decisions of this nature are never easy. On behalf of Olympians past, present and future, I thank the Harper Government for continuing to recognize the importance of funding high-performance sport and our National Sport Federations, as well as for recognizing the inherent value that sport brings to Canadian society,” said Canadian Olympic Committee President Marcel Aubut.
Economic Action Plan 2012 specifically delivers for high-performance sport in the following ways:
• Maintained commitment of previous investments in high-performance sport, including support to athletes, National Sport Federations, and hosting major international sporting events.
• Reaffirming commitment of over $450 million to the 2015 Pan American and Parapan American Games in Toronto.
“At a time when our Canadian athletes are building on the momentum of our successful winter performances at the Vancouver Games, continuation of high performance funding by the largest single funder of Sport in Canada will help to energize our athletes as they head to London,” said Caroline Assalian, Canadian Olympic Committee Chief Sport Officer. “We are pleased with this outcome and thank the Harper Government for their continued leadership in the support of Canada’s high performance athletes.”
