Men’s volleyball team begins World League quest

The 2014 FIVB Volleyball World League gets started this weekend for Canada with the men’s national team hosting Finland in its Group C opener.

Canada (ranked 11th in the world) and Finland (30) are in a pool with Australia (14) and Belgium (37) in Group 2 of the Intercontinental Round.  These countries will meet each other four times before the top two move on to the Group 2 final.

Because Australia is the host of the final, Canada must win the pool or finish second behind the Aussies to move on.

In 2013, Canada won its group and eventually finished fifth in the World League, moving up seven spots in the world ranking. When the Canadians start this latest campaign in Calgary on Saturday, they’ll look to beat the Finns just as they did last year in pool play.

Other World League host cities this year will be Vancouver when Belgium visits June 13-14 and Edmonton the following weekend when Canada takes on Australia.
