Olympic speed skater Michael Gilday announces retirement
Short track speed skater Michael Gilday officially called it a career on Tuesday.
Gilday, who held the 1000m world record at one point, leaves the sport as part of the current world record holding Canadian men’s relay team of which Olivier Jean, Charles Hamelin and François Hamelin were also part of in 2012.

Last February in Sochi, Gilday – along with his Canadian teammates – raced to fifth place in the Olympic relay event, while individually finishing 17th in the 1500m.
“Throughout my career the highs have definitely outweighed the lows, and it has been an honour and a privilege to wear the Maple Leaf and to represent Canada at the Olympics, World Championships and on the World Cup circuit”, Gilday said via a Speed Skating Canada release.
The 27-year-old Yellowknifer also set the current 1500m national mark (2:06.57) back in 2009.
Since 2006, Gilday racked up a total of 30 World Cup medals (seven golds).
