Maple Leaf Moments: Olympic Eve

‘Oh, it’s on,’ we’ll be saying,  exactly one year and one day from now  as the first Canadian athletes step out into the global spotlight of the Opening Ceremony in Sochi, Russia. Building on every bit of grit, pride and excitement we’ve been storing up since Vancouver, we can expect a full blast of Canadian energy as we take on the world. Only 365 more sleeps.

On This Day:  In  1948, Barbara Ann Scott won the gold medal in ladies’ Figure Skating at the V Olympic Winter Games in St. Moritz. This remains the only Olympic gold medal won by a Canadian singles skater.

Sochi Story: With an international target on his back, two-time world champion Patrick Chan will begin his quest to be the first male singles skater to claim gold. Competition will begin Feb. 6 with the men’s and pairs short programs for Figure Skating’s first Olympic team event as well as qualifying for ladies’ moguls and men’s and women’s Snowboard slopestyle.
