Christine Nesbitt (London, ON) blazed to a time of 39.356s to win bronze in the 1500m at the World Single Distance Championships in Sochi, Russia Friday.

The medal marks the 12th podium finish at the World Championships for Nesbitt, including seven gold, in a career that has included an Olympic gold medal in the 1000m at the 2010 Vancouver Games and a silver medal in the team pursuit in Turin.

“I was surprised to come away with a bronze medal,” said Nesbitt. “It wasn’t the greatest race of my life. But, it was good enough today for a bronze medal. So that’s kind of the silver lining – that even with a bad race I can still medal.”

Nesbitt will be looking to defend her 1000m world title on Saturday and will also take part in the team pursuit event on Sunday.
